Senior Ministries
While many of our senior ministries are ministries of care for those who are a bit more mature, at the heart is the desire to not only serve, but to give seniors the opportunity to “serve back.”
In other words, seniors have a lot to share! And part of our mission as a congregation is to engage all people of all ages in the work of Jesus. And seniors do that well!
CLASSROOM GRANDPARENTS
A number of our seniors are engaged as “classroom grandparents” with our Sunday School classes. Connected to a class, they stay with that class as it “grows up,” developing a relationship with them. While intended to be a “gift to seniors,” many “gift back” to the kids – a great way to nurture our inter-generational community!
HOME VISITS..
By the pastors
Pastor Jon and Pastor Jean regularly visit our homebound members, bringing Holy Communion, a word of scripture, some prayer time, and conversation.
By the people
Our home communion teams bring the sacrament from the altar to homebound members on a regular basis. An opportunity for connection with those who are unable to out and about, but also the opportunity for people to be a part of an important ministry. Want to be one of our visitors? See Pastor Jean or Pastor Jon!
NURSING HOME SERVICES
Each month the pastoral staff visits the nursing homes and assisted living facilities in West Salem to share in worship. The worship service, with Holy Communion, occurs on the third Thursday of the month at the following time and locations:
10:30 a.m. Lakeview Health Center
1:30 p.m. Salem Terrace
3:00 p.m. Mulder Health Care Facility
SENIOR CONNECTION
Seniors connecting with seniors! Gathering together the second Tuesday of the month for coffee, goodies, conversation, and support. Check with the church office for this month’s location!
CARD MINISTRY
Who doesn’t like to get REAL mail? Our card ministry reaches out to our seniors and homebound folk. Cards are sent several times a year – but as an added bonus, we invite worshipers on Saturday/Sunday to sign the cards, with cards having 20-30-40 signatures! And best of all, most of those signing the cards don’t know the recipient – but that doesn’t matter…it’s a reminder that we are all part of the same Body of Christ, even when we would otherwise be strangers!
THANKSGIVING BAGS
Each year at Thanksgiving, bags of goodies are prepared and shared with our homebound members. Nothing too big and elaborate, just some treats to satisfy a sweet tooth or a momentary craving. But in the end, it’s really about reminding them that they are not forgotten!
OWLS
The Older Wiser Lutherans (OWLS) is a group for anyone over the age of 55. This group offers support, fun, and educational opportunities for the mature(r) members of Our Savior’s. Programs feature guest speakers or interesting tours, and time to chat over coffee.
