Holy Communion: All Are Welcome!

Holy Communion is a gift – God’s gift to God’s people! And yes, you are welcome. More on that in a moment…

But first, Holy Communion is one of two sacraments – Baptism is the other.  A sacrament is a “means of grace,” a way in which God touches us with underserved and unconditional love.

In Holy Communion, we gather as a community of the faithful, sharing in the real presence of Jesus through the bread and the wine, celebrating in the meal God’s love for us.  Through bread and wine we are embraced by a loving God through the body and blood of Jesus, and, in the words of the Apostle Paul, “we proclaim the death of Jesus until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26).

Typically at Our Savior’s Holy Communion is with wafers (bread) and wine.  The wine is served in small glasses.  We offer standard wafers  and gluten free wafers.  We also have grape juice available as well as the wine.  Communion is served at the altar, but for those who are unable to come forward, we deliver!

Most children begin receiving Holy Communion in 5th grade, after receiving instruction on the importance and meaning of the Sacrament.  The instruction includes parents and is designed to pique their curiosity – and give them a little fun time as well!

Holy Communion is part of our worship experience, and lay persons frequently bring the Communion from the altar to persons who are homebound.  The pastoral staff also visits those who are homebound on a regular basis, bringing them the Sacrament.  In addition Communion services are held once a month at Lakeview, Salem Terrace, and Mulder’s.

But…are YOU welcome? YES! We welcome to the table all baptized Christians from any denominational background who understand that Jesus Christ is truly present in the bread and the wine. Children already receiving the sacrament will not be denied!  And younger children not accustomed to receiving the sacrament are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing.

Come and join us.  Be fed by God’s gifts of grace through the presence of Jesus!
